“A balanced portfolio should be just that. It should be a combination of risky assets and less risky assets to ensure that in times of large declines or indeed large gains, the returns are muted. In addition to this asset allocation, we select managers with complimentary styles who should perform in different scenarios. We have complimented the emerging market exposure with managers such as Bill Mott and Neil Woodford, who have defensive portfolios that should weather the current storm. In our bond allocation, we have not chased higher yields at the expense of quality and our alternatives are just that, alternatives.”
